En un estudio reciente, se descubrió que aquellas personas que carecen de una cuenta de cheques, suelen gastar hasta $1114 al año en cuotas al canjear sus cheques por efectivo. Y es que la matemática no miente, el canjear su cheque en una casa de cambio o el pagar sus gastos con giros postales (Money Orders) puede ser caro, como lo muestra el siguiente ejemplo:
(1) Monto del cheque – $600 (2) Períodos de Pago al mes – 2 (Cada 2 semanas)= 26 periodos (3) Costo por canjear su cheque (%) – 1% (4) # de Giros Postales (Money Order) – 5 (5) Costo por Giro Postal (Money Order) – $1 (6) Estampilla postal $ .44
(1)$600 x (2)26 periodos = $15,600 x (3)1% = $156
(4) 5 Giros postales x (5) $1.00 cada uno = $5.00 X 12 meses = $60
(6) Estampilla postal $.44 x 5 giros postales = $2.20 x 12 meses = $26.40
Costo Total = $242.40 al año
Por lo tanto el no tener una cuenta bancaria podría costarle no solo $242 al año, sino también la posibilidad de ahorrar para algún gasto inesperado. Hoy en día, muchas instituciones bancarias ofrecen cuentas sin costo alguno o con bajas cuotas que podrían ser canceladas al abrir una cuenta de ahorros.
El abrir una cuenta bancaria no es tan difícil como parece, los requisitos varían de banco a banco, sin embargo los pasos suelen ser los mismos:
1- Encontrar el banco o cooperativa de crédito (Credit Union) de su preferencia;
2- Proveer identificación, generalmente se requieren dos tipos de identificación (Seguro Social, California ID, Matrícula Consular Mexicana o Tarjeta de Identificación Guatemalteca, Tarjeta de Estudiante con foto, Tarjeta de seguro médico, Factura de teléfono, PG&E, Basura, Internet/cable, entre otros);
3- Abrir su cuenta y disfrutar de sus beneficios.
Para aquellos cuyas cuentas de cheques fueron canceladas por sobregirarse, igualmente podrían regresar al sistema bancario a través de cuentas conocidas como “Second Chance” o de Segunda Oportunidad y así gozar de todos los servicios, seguridades y ventajas que el sistema bancario ofrece.
